Some McKinney Residents Say TXU Butchered Trees

McKINNEY (CBS 11 News) ― The mayor and some residents in McKinney are angry because TXU crews began pruning trees in some neighborhoods.

They are complaining that the crews are doing a bad job and are taking off too many shrubs. They say it's changing the face of the area.

"[TXU] made a mess out of this tree," said McKinney Mayor Bill Whitfield. "Not only this tree, but hundreds of trees."

Mayor Whitfield said crews are destroying parts of the cities natural resources. "These must not be arborist," he said. "If they are, they're certainly not practicing the art."

Some believe parts of Valley Creek Trial is loosing it's main attraction as crews take preventative measures to stop future power outages.

The woodsy park isn't the only area affected. Residents in the historic district don't want any of it to change.

David Firth just purchased a home and the magnificent oak tree in his yard was a big draw. He's hoping the tree-trimming will be minimum and is pleased TXU is keeping him informed.

"They've been very concerned," Firth said. "They called an arborist and are going to work with the town."

Officials say they have hired professionals for the job, and the health of the trees is a high priority. They say thousands of trees are pruned every year in North Texas, and it's needed for safety reasons.

The mayor said there is a way around the problem. If TXU continues cutting trees, he said, "we need to put power lines underground."
