UNT Campus On Alert After Recent Robberies

Seema Mathur
DENTON (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Students saying they were held at knife and gunpoint near the University of North Texas Campus, in Denton, have police concerned and the campus on the alert.

Most students who talked to CBS 11 News were aware of the recent robberies. That sense of awareness is likely because the university was quick to paste notices on buildings as well as send e-mail alerts to all students and staff.

One student, who talked to CBS 11 News and doesn't want to be identified, says he now walks with added caution and guard in his step. Just days ago the young man says two men approached him with a knife and gun.

The student described the attack. "They said, 'give me your wallet' and then you have to rush. If you don't rush, I'll kill you."

The young man immediately complied and handed over his wallet.  After grabbing it the suspects left, getting into a car with a driver waiting.

The victim says the suspects were apparently hiding somewhere and he didn't see them until they approached him from the back.

That attack happened around 1am on Saturday, on the edge of campus, on a street lined with apartments.  The same street Jennifer Nguyen walks on.  The UNT student admits that often she pays more attention to the text messages on her phone, than of her surroundings.

But since the crime notices were posted all over campus she says she's going to pay more attention. "I'm on extra alert because I'm here late and I have to walk by myself to my car across campus."

Police are also concerned and investigating closely a robbery that happened just off campus, near the environmental education building. The victim there was also a student.

While police say it's likely the suspects are the same three guys, witnesses and victims have varied descriptions of the race of the suspects.  What is consistent is that the three men are believed to be in their 20's.

Anyone with information about the crimes is asked to contact the Denton Police Department.
