Park Cities Police Investigate Vacant House Thefts
PARK CITIES (CBS 11 News) ―
Police in University Park and Highland Park are investigating a rash of burglaries in their cities. According to officials, thieves are stealing appliances and other property.
A lot of contractors are working in both University Park and Highland Park because there are a considerable number of new homes under construction and others for sale. That makes it easy for thieves to blend in and commit burglaries.
Lollie Boedeker says she chose to build her home in University Park, so she wouldn't have to worry about crime. "My children were demanding that I move into the Park Cities when my husband passed away - where it was safe," she said.
Since June 1, University Park Police have investigated 17 burglaries at construction sites, eight of which involved the theft of high-end appliances.
But, before Boedeker moved in burglars stole a microwave and two ranges from her kitchen.
In many cases, the thieves will drag the appliances through the home, causing extensive damage. To remove the items thieves often put the appliances into the garage, and park a truck near the garage door to load.
All together, Boedeker spent thousands of dollars replacing property and repairing damage.
To alert people in the area, University Park police sent a letter to homebuilders last month warning them of the trend and offering tips on how to prevent the crimes.
Highland Park police say some thieves are casing homes by looking at virtual tours online or visiting during open houses.
Police in both cities have stepped up area patrols, adding plain clothes officers.
As it stands, police aren't sure if the burglaries are the work of an individual or a group. Police continue to investigate the crimes and say they are focusing on who is buying the stolen property.
