Gifts Keep On Giving When You Re-Gift

by Shannon Hori
DALLAS (CBS 11 News) ― The holiday season is over, and if you're like most people, you probably got at least one gift you don't like.

Instead of stashing it, or tossing it, how about re-gifting?

Carol Varn has quite the collection of gifts she considers less than perfect presents. "You do end up with a lot of things that you either aren't going to use or are duplicate," she said.

Her solution: let the gift 'keep on giving' by re-gifting.

Go ahead, admit it. You've re-gifted too! And most likely you've been a recipient of a re-gifted present, whether you know it or not! A recent survey shows nearly 40 percent of us have re-gifted. Only a third of us do it to save money.

"We've become a nation of recyclers," said Barbara Bitela's, an expert on re-gifting. She says it's fine to do, if you do it right.

First, make sure it's something you know the person will like. Ask yourself: How well do I know the person?

And be sure they're not the one who gave you the gift. Bitels says one way to stay safe is to "leave the tag on from the person who gave you the gift."

Another rule to remember is to not use the gift and then give it away.

Bitela said, "You get a necklace in a box, you wear it once, you put it back in the box; that's a no, no."

And always re-wrap the item. Bitela says some things make more sense than others to re-gift.

"A good candidate for re-gifting would probably be jewelry in the box, wine, candy is ideal," she said.

Re-gifting done right saves money and makes sense.
