PLANO (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Shattered glass is all that's left of a Plano man's window on his BMW.
The man, who did not want to be identified, found the mess Christmas Eve.
"I was pretty ticked off," he said.
He said the thieves stole his Beltronics radar detector, which is worth about $450.
After calling police, he decided to play detective. He started looking up items on CraigsList.org to see if thieves were selling his radar detector.
"And there it was," he said. "I emailed him. I told him, 'I'm interested in your radar detector.' I asked him if he had the box. He said he did not, but we can meet wherever."
He then called police to warn them there may be a confrontation over his stolen radar detector.
The man set up the meeting outside a drug store on Frankford Road near the Dallas North Tollway. Police arrived and confronted two suspects.
"He got the radar detector from them, brought it over to me, verified the serial number and found it matched," said the man.
That's when police arrested the two men.
"I was relieved. I got my item back, and I'll be relieved when they pay for all the damages they caused my car and all the hassle."
He says his car's repair bill could be as high as $900, but he has his radar detector back.
Police say this is a good lesson for consumers. Police were able to prove the stolen product belonged to the victim because he had the serial number.
