Pilot In Good Condition Following Crash

DALLAS (AP) ― A retired Vietnam veteran was in good condition after his antique military aircraft crash-landed in a field just a few minutes after takeoff.

John Sledge, 72, suffered a compressed vertebrae and a cut on the head after the engine of his restored T-28 Trojan, a piston-engine military trainer aircraft, stopped. The plane was flying out of Mid-Way Regional Airport and landed in a field east of the facility.

FAA spokesman Lynn Lunsford said preliminary indications show that an oil pressure problem caused the crash.

Sledge was flown to Methodist Central Hospital and was scheduled to be released Sunday.

The former Marine Corps pilot is a member of the Trojan Phlyers of Fort Worth and was on his way to an air show at Cedar Creek Lake for Fourth of July festivities.
