Man Kills Self After Rape Charge
Nursing Home Worker Raped Alzheimer's Patient
Family Suing Village Creek Nursing Home
FORT WORTH (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
A state investigation revealed a laundry worker was caught raping an Alzheimer's patient at the Village Creek Nursing Home in Fort Worth.
Charles Schealy, 67, told police the sex was consensual. However, he was arrested and charged with one count of sexual assault in June. He was immediately fired from the facility.
On November 16, police say Shealey committed suicide. Police say he waited on tracks for an oncoming train to run him over.
The family of the 65-year-old woman filed a lawsuit against the nursing home Monday. It claims the home was responsible for the assault by failing to send the worker to any job training.
The Alzheimer's patient was a resident of the facility for three years and has since been removed. Her family now says she may not be alone. Since she suffers from dementia, there's no telling how long she underwent the abuse.
Nursing home administrators are defending their center. They say they performed a background check on Shealey, like all workers, and he had no criminal history.
Other workers said the case was an isolated incident.
