False Explosion Report Causes Downtown Evacuation
FORT WORTH (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Tense moments in Fort Worth after a downtown office building was evacuated.
The Fort Worth Fire Department received a report of an explosion and heavy smoke at the Wagner Building at 7th and Houston. Traffic was temporarily rerouted around the area.
When rescuers arrived they found a room full of computer equipment and activated the fire extinguishing system on the 6th floor. The system, made to work in conjunction with smoke alarms, is a freon-based extinguisher typically used in areas where electrical equipment is kept.
Since the extinguishing system was activated, the entire building was evacuated as a safety precaution. No one was injured.
Rescue crews did an atmosphere test, made sure the building had enough oxygen to breathe and everyone was allowed back inside.
Upon further investigation fire officials found no evidence of an explosion or fire.
Fire officials say when the extinguishing system is activated it makes a loud noise and the extinguishing ingredients will fill a room with what might 'appear to be smoke'.
