Random Dallas Freeway Shootings Cause Concern
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
There are legitimate concerns about your safety along a Dallas freeway, after a young college student is shot in an apparent random attack.
Police say two others have also been recently shot on a stretch of Walton Walker Blvd., where it turns into Spur 408, near Illinois Ave. in Southeast Dallas.
CBS 11 news spoke to the most recent victim.
"It was surreal. It was terrifying," said Mckenzie Baird, who is still limping from a gunshot wound to her leg.
The 19-year-old Dallas Baptist University student was leaving a babysitting job early Saturday morning when she turned onto Walton Walker Freeway. It was then she saw a car pull alongside her. "I hear these noises and I look over and it was a car shooting at me."
Baird says the attack was unprovoked. "I didn't cut in front of anyone. I didn't aggravate anyone," she said.
The teenager was able to drive to the side of the road, despite the stinging pain of a bullet lodged in her thigh.
Now, she's concerned the suspects may strike again. "I hope they're brought to justice, but all I can do is pray for them."
Less than a month ago, a couple driving to DFW International Airport was shot at along the same stretch of freeway. Police reports suggest the two incidents could be related.
"We'll definitely look into the possibility that these are related but right now we can't confirm that," Sr. Cpl. Kevin Janse of the Dallas Police Department told CBS 11.
As it stands, police have no suspects in any of the cases and say all the shootings appear to be random.
Baird told police there were two gunmen but she wasn't able to provide a description.
For now, Baird is taking the university shuttle bus while she recovers from the gunshot that has left her alive and believing in divine intervention.
