A North Texas college student has been arrested after allegedly discharging a gun on campus.
Police at Weatherford College say they received a report of two gunshots heard at Coyote Village student housing Sunday night.
A campus officer and Weatherford police responded and launched a, "full search of the facility and the adjacent vicinity for suspicious activity." Officers found a single shell casing in the vicinity where the shots were heard, but no weapon.
After performing a room-by-room search Monday morning, an anonymous tip was received leading school officials and police to the College's Physical Education Building. There a loaded 10 millimeter semi-automatic pistol was found in a backpack. The gun is believed to belong to 19-year-old student Ronnie Dennis Stewart.
Stewart, who is from Fort Worth, was arrested Monday evening on a 'possession of a firearm' charge and is being held in the Parker County Jail on a $35,000 bond.
Police say after the initial incident, and finding no one injured, they determined that the approximately 280 students who reside at Coyote Village weren't in immediate danger.
"There was definitely concern at the time though we were hammering as hard as we could to make sure that we could find this student and keep this campus safe," said Weatherford College Police Chief Paul Stone.
At least one parent and student are questioning if police did enough to prevent another deadly college shooting. "They should have locked this campus down," said parent Lisa Pennington. "They shouldn't have let any students on or off campus."
Police say in the 12 hours from the 'shots fired' call until the weapon was found they tried warning everyone that a gunman was on the loose. Information about the incident was distributed early Monday morning, in a full, campus-wide alert posted by e-mail.
"The Weatherford College site has been down, off and on, all year," says student Myshel Pennington. "And then they sent an e-mail
so I don't see why they did that. They should have texted or called or something."
"I believe that what we will do from this point is review how we responded, how we reacted, and see what we can do better to protect this community," Stone said.
Police are still investigating Stewarts' motives for having the gun on campus.
