Controversy Still Surrounds White Rock Lake Lights
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
The trails around White Rock Lake are dark and some want to make them safer by lighting the paved paths that circle the water.
"People feel safer when there's lighting and by lighting the area in the evening it's going to attract more people that's going to use this great resource that we have in the city," said Lt. Mike Woodbury, Dallas Police Department.
The types of lights being considered by a neighborhood panel were on display during a meeting on Thursday.
Residents though are at odds over whether illuminating the lake will disturb homeowners who live near the lights and disrupt the natural environment at night.
But most who use the path to walk, bike or jog support the idea.
"As long as they're reasonable, I think it's a good thing for us," said Max Davis, Dallas resident.
"I think a lot more people would come down here," said Dallas resident Cindy Velez.
Most believe the lights will also discourage criminals.
"That's always for us the utmost importance is the safety factor," said Denise Tyler, a Dallas resident.
But one homeowner says she's convinced more lighting will only attract crime.
"One third of the crime that happens at night is in all the lit parking lots, which has brought up the concern," said Catrine Sutter, a lakefront homeowner. "We need to think about does the light bring in more crime or less."
