Officer Killed In Wise County Police Chase
WISE COUNTY (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
An officer from the Bridgeport Police Department died in the line of duty Thursday afternoon.
The incident happened while Wise County Sherriff's Deputies were pursuing a suspect on Highway 114 in Bridgeport.
Sgt. Randy White was waving traffic off the highway to clear motorists out of harm's way when the chase suspect slammed into his squad car.
The initial chase started in Decatur where Wise County Sheriff's Deputies tried to stop Stephen York for a traffic violation.
When he did not pull over, officers pursued York, who was initially driving a white Dodge pickup truck.
Deputies lost York when the chase entered Bridgeport, but they soon found him again in a different vehicle.
The chase continued until the suspect crashed into the back of Sgt. White's cruiser. The cruiser then slammed into the back of a flatbed pickup he had just waived over.
Sgt. White died at the scene. He had been with the department for about five years and leaves behind a wife and a child.
York is in the custody of the Texas Rangers. He has been charged with capital murder and his bond is set at $1 million.
This is the first fatality in the history of Bridgeport Police Department.
The highway was closed for many hours as crews removed the wreckage from the scene.
