Wylie Man Beaten To Death, 5 Teens Arrested
WYLIE (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
A Wylie man is dead and five teenagers are in police custody, charged with murder in the man's death.
Wylie police say the man was beaten to death just before midnight Sunday in the 300 block of South 3rd street. They say the suspects did not know the victim, so it's not clear why an argument escalated to such violence.
Witnesses say 28-year-old Jonathon Bird told the teens to stop driving recklessly outside of his home.
"They were driving down the road recklessly, squealing tires, just not driving safe and Mr. Bird hollered at them to slow down," said Wylie Police Detective Venece Perepiczka.
After a verbal exchange, police say the teens came back and beat Bird.
Bird was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police were able to find the suspects, based on tips from witnesses.
"He said the wrong thing at the wrong time to the wrong kids," Perepiczka said. "What makes anyone snap to the point they get out of their vehicle and beat somebody to death?"
Neighbors say some teens have caused trouble in their neighborhood, but they never expected anything like this.
"It's totally incomprehensible to me that one person would do that to another with so little motivation" says Bird's neighbor Sue McMahill.
Police arrested 17-year-old Ethan Dorris and four 16-year-old boys, who were not identified because of their age.
McCahill says unsupervised teens have caused problems in the area and they're thinking about forming a neighborhood watch to prevent more crime.
"We will be keeping closer tabs on each other."
All five teens have been charged with murder, a second degree felony.
