Warrant Of Seizure Issued For Wylie Rooster

WYLIE (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
A Wylie resident says his rooster is his pet, but city officials say having the animal is against the law. The debate has escalated into the police department issuing a warrant of seizure for the rooster.
The days are long for Jack Scheel. The North Texas man said he had become used to having his pet rooster by his side, while he worked. "'Chickie' would come over and tell me if it was good or not," he explained.
For years that rooster would walk around Scheels' car repair shop, greeting customers. "I got him when he was just a little guy," Scheel says.
But a few weeks ago animal control and Wylie police told Scheel to get rid of the rooster citing a violation of a city ordinance. "The one police officer says, 'if we find that chicken in the city limits we're going to arrest him'," Scheel recalled laughing. He went on the show CBS 11 News the documentation. "This here is an arrest warrant for the chicken," Scheel said pointing to the paper. "They go to the expense for a little one pound black innocent chicken."
Wylie police issued a statement that said animal control and police decided to pursue a warrant due to the uncooperative nature of the owner and his refusal to remove the rooster.
Scheel's not the only one who misses Chickie. He says a kitten rescued by the rooster is also lonely. "The kitty I can tell is depressed, because his buddy is gone," Scheel said.
Scheel said every night the rooster and cat slept together. Now, Chickie lives about an hour drive away, outside of Wylie city limits.
When CBS 11 visited Scheel, it had been two weeks since he made the drive to see his pet and he enjoyed the reunion.
Scheel says he misses the somewhat fugitive rooster and is protesting his citation. Now it seems the rooster fight is going to court.
