93-Year-Old Critical After Beating In Terrell

TERRELL (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― A 93-year-old woman is in critical condition at Parkland Hospital after she was savagely beaten. It happened during a home invasion in Terrell. The attack has left neighbors and friends shocked and scared.

Because of the attack the entire neighborhood is rattled by the thought of someone robbing and beating up a 93-year-old woman.

Police say a relative found Wynell Bourns on her kitchen floor Tuesday. The woman had been beaten with weapons that may include a hammer. Police say it appears she tried to fight back. When rescuers arrived she was barely conscious and incoherent.

Bourns has severe head injuries and now needs a ventilator to breathe.

Police say several personal items and the woman's Ford Taurus were stolen form the house. A patrol officer spotted the abandoned car Wednesday near a Terrell church. Police are searching the vehicle for fingerprints and clues.

Based on when the car was found, authorities say Bourns may have been lying injured in her home for up to a day.

Always pleasant, always helpful, Bourns is beloved at First Baptist Church of Terrell, where she has worshipped for 13 years.

"At 93, if you met her, you wouldn't ever dream she was that old. Just a dear, sweet lady," said John Lowrie, Senior Pastor of First Baptist Church of Terrell. "[She] reminds me of my grandmother, and I suspect she is an adopted grandmother to many."

Pastor Lowrie visited Bourns at Parkland on Wednesday and says the woman is a fighter. "Knowing her, I wouldn't be surprised to see her get back on her feet and get back going. But it's in the Lord's hands."

Police say they have several leads in the case that they are following and are hopeful to make an arrest soon.
