Dallas ACORN Workers Vow To Press On

DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― The U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate have both voted to stop government funding of the national community activist group ACORN.

Although the differences in the measures must be reconciled before the money actually stops flowing, the votes are a clear sign of the fallout from recent allegations of voter fraud and several controversial hidden camera episodes at some ACORN offices in other cities.

ACORN stands for The Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now.

The group's own national leaders are calling for an investigation, after embarrassing hidden camera video shows ACORN staffers giving housing advice to a fake pimp and prostitute.

Dallas has an ACORN chapter, and its workers say the controversy will not stop their work.

In Dallas, the group fought for improved living conditions for apartment tenants in Pleasant Grove, pushed for the demolition of a drug-infested Oak Cliff Motel and fights blight in other areas of the city.

Allison Brim works in ACORN's Dallas office.  "We're going to continue doing what we do," she said, "whether they cut federal funding or not. ACORN will keep fighting making positive changes in this community."

ACORN workers we talked to today point to partisan politics as the root of the national attention.

But here in Dallas, embarrassing video hasn't stopped their efforts yet.
