Heroes Park Opens In Arlington
ARLINGTON (CBS 11 News) ―
Uniformed men and women standing at attention surrounded the seated surviving family members during the dedication, which included the laying of wreaths and playing of taps.
A tree-lined walkway with rock markers along its edges leads into the park. A fountain gently trickles water into a pool in front of the arched memorial.
Arlington police and firefighters dedicated their memorial to their fallen members Saturday.
Dubbed Heroes Park, the area on West Green Oaks Boulevard is near a police station and fire training facility.
It is a gently arching, white stone memorial bearing the names of 10 people killed in the line of duty since 1930.
"It means a lot that they recognize the sacrifice not only that he gave but also his fellow fallen officers," said Jim Hanking, brother of Officer Craig Hanking killed in the line of duty in 1994.
"Its probably going to mean a lot more to them when they come here and everyone else is gone," Arlington assistant fire chief Alan Kassen said. "They can come here to reflect and think about how much their husbands or wives are really loved."
The memorial is located at 2100 W. Green Oaks Blvd in Arlington.
