2nd Dallas Armored Car Robber Pleads Guilty
DALLAS (CBS 11 News/AP) ―
A second repeat armored car robber faces prison over a 2007 holdup in Dallas.
The U.S. Attorney's Office says Donald Ray Williams pleaded guilty Thursday to interference with commerce by threats or violence. Williams also pleaded guilty to using, carrying and brandishing a firearm during or in relation to a crime of violence.
In a press release issued by James T. Jacks, the Acting United States Attorney for the Northern District of Texas, Jacks confirmed that Williams pled guilty in federal court 'to charges related to his involvement in the September 2007 robbery of a Loomis armored car in which nearly $2 million was stolen'.
At the time of the robbery, the armored car was parked at a Chase Bank located at 1824 Abrams Road, in Dallas.
According to police, a Loomis Armored Car had stopped in front of the bank. Two guards had begun a scheduled money transfer when two masked suspects drove up in a blue van.
According to the armored car employees, two armed men got out of the minivan and pointed weapons at them while they were making the Sept. 5 money drop. After getting the money bags, the suspects abandoned the van at Lakewood Library.
Another suspect in the armored car heist, Freddy Lee Foots, was arrested days after the robbery. Foots was captured after leading police on a long-distance, high-speed, chase that ended in Van Horn, Texas. At the time of his arrest more than $400,000 in cash was found in the trunk of Foots' vehicle and another $145,000 was found in the vehicle that was accompanying him.
Foots, who faced the same charges as Williams, was found guilty for his part in the armored car heist and sentenced to more than 29 years in federal prison.
Williams was arrested on March 15, 2009, in Rosebud, Texas, after evading arrest for nearly 18 months. After being taken into custody, Williams admitted that the stolen money was divided between himself and the other individuals that participated in the robbery. Williams' share of the proceeds was $300,000.
Williams also admitted to authorities that he had used a portion of the stolen money to buy a BMW for himself, a Volkswagen for his girlfriend, as well as clothing, shoes, and a number of other high-end items.
Williams will be sentenced by U.S. District Judge Jane J. Boyle on August 6, 2009, and faces a maximum statutory sentence of life in prison and a $500,000 fine.
Both 53-year-old men had served time for a 1988 Dallas armored car robbery.
