DPD: Video Vigilante Cited For Misdemeanor Assault
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Dallas neighborhood activist Avi Adelman had a run in with police officers. The creator of the
Barking Dogs website was cited for misdemeanor assault.
Adelman posts videos of what goes on after hours on Greenville Avenue on his website. For years, he has documented drunks and acts of lewdness around his Belmont Avenue home.
CBS 11 has learned that Dallas police will soon start doing the same thing to document problems and also to discourage citizens from becoming video vigilantes.
Aricka Hanson said she and a friend were trying to get help to an unconscious stranger outside a bar on Greenville Avenue early Sunday morning.
That's when she said she was shoved and cursed at by Adelman.
"Apparently I got in his way, and he didn't like it so he shoved me. I don't think there's anything good about recording a guy who's unconscious on the ground," Hanson said.
Adelman declined comment, but accuses the 25-year-old restaurant manager of assaulting him during the incident. Dallas police say it shouldn't be happening in the first place.
"We try to discourage that," said Deputy Chief Vince Golbeck, Dallas Police Department.
Golbeck said the Dallas officers will soon be accompanied by their own video crews to document problems, not only to discourage citizens from doing it, but also because it works.
"I doubt the majority of the patrons or the clients are going to be cussing us or trying to attack us or question us about why we're videotaping," said Golbeck. "Gopefully we can try to take that burden away from some citizens that feel like they need to do that."
