Trinity River Canoe Accident Leaves 1 Dead

DALLAS (CBS 11 News) ―

One person was killed and another survived an afternoon canoe accident on the Trinity River.

The canoe the men were paddling, near the Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery just north of Interstate-20, apparently somehow flipped over. One man was swept away by the current; the other was able to swim to shore.

In a live television interview Cpl. Kevin Janse, with the Dallas Police Department, said, "They have located the body and they're in the process of trying to recover it."

Rescuers had a hard time reaching the victim because his body had floated to the spillway portion of the river.

"This individual went under shortly after 1:30 p.m., so this has been quite an extensive search for the individual that was, once again, caught up under the current," Janse said.

The surviving canoeist is reportedly in good condition. Rescuers don't believe that either man was wearing a life jacket.
