Driver Crashes Vehicle Into Kaufman Restaurant

KAUFMAN (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Some frightening moments for workers and customers at a Kaufman restaurant; after a pickup crashes into the building.

The truck crashed into the El Mexicano Taqueria in the 1500 block of South Washington, during the noon lunch rush.

An elderly couple was apparently traveling on Washington when the driver went off the roadway. Their white pickup went through a fence, struck another vehicle, ran through the patio and then crashed into the restaurant.

Raja Ditta was at the gas station next door, and watched as the truck went through the parking lot.  "The truck was flying. It was one second before it hit that building."

There were a handful of customers eating inside at the time of the accident, but none of them were injured.

Customer Richard Haynes witnessed the bizarre accident.  "We sat in the back, thank goodness. We just heard a loud noise, sounded like a tornado, but it was a truck. Everybody was running around crazy."

The Kaufman Fire Department says a total of four people were taken to the hospital, including the driver of the truck and three workers from the restaurant.

The three restaurant workers suffered only minor injuries; one of them is believed to have a broken leg.

"From the damage and if the truck had gone further into the seating area, it could have been a lot worse" says Kaufman Assistant Fire Chief Ronnie Davis.

Firefighters say it's unclear what caused the driver to lose control, but witnesses says he may have had a heart condition.  The police are still investigating the crash.
