Wind Causing Problems Across North Texas

by Eileen Gonzales
DALLAS (CBS 11 News) ― Hang on to your hat! Strong northwest winds moved into North Texas late Tuesday night, causing problems for residents and travelers on Wednesday.

"It's gotten really nasty out in the last day or so," said Dallas man Scott Harris. "The wind is just nasty. It blew a bunch of shingles off the roof on our house."

The straight line winds knocked down tree limbs and power lines, leaving many residents without electricity. TXU reports about 3,000 to 4,000 customers in North Texas are without electricity, and more scattered outages are expected.

Also, at Daggett Montessori School in Fort Worth, a tree was blown over onto a car injuring at least one person.

DFW Airport is experiencing delays on some incoming flights (click here for delay information from the FAA). As many as 60 flights have been canceled. Travelers are encouraged to call their airline before they leave for the airport (click here for phone numbers).

DFW Airport spokesman Ken Capps said, "This is very much like weather patterns we see, like with an ice storm or bad thunderstorm, which, the best thing the FAA can do in a situation like this, is to slow down air traffic and make sure everything stays safe."

These travel delays also affected troops returning home, who had already traveled more than 24 hours from the Middle East.

However, one group was determined to not have their plans ruined by the wind. A line of video game fanatics have been camped outside the Best Buy in Plano since Tuesday morning, hoping to get their hands on the new PlayStation 3 when it's released late Thursday night. "It's getting hectic, the rain and stuff, but we're going to stand out here, try to fight through it," said one of those waiting in line. They only hope that their tents will hold up.
