Painting Pictures With A Cell Phone

DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― On a beautiful afternoon in Addison, Betsy Lewis is in search of art.

"My first reaction is - Oh my god. What can I possibly shoot?" she said.

Finding art is one thing, but capturing it is whole different story.

"I would say I'm happy with one out of every three videos I shoot," she said.

Recently, Lewis was joined by other artists who were given a challenge: create art using a cell phone, and do it in less than 30 seconds.

"What can we create? How can we use this to create art that nobody really thinks about?" said video artist Kyle Kondas.

From North Texas to Kentucky to New York to Canada, nearly a dozen artists are trying to answer that very question. Every day they seek out something to shoot with their cell phones.

These video vignettes are now on exhibit at the Dallas Contemporary Art Museum. From short films to performance art to still photography, everything on display has been captured on a cell.

"I think it changes the way people will be creative and make art," said Dean Terry, Dallas Contemporary Art Museum. "Usually the idea is that you sit in a studio alone all day. But most people are out in the world. This is a way to make art when they're out in the world doing things."

For Doreen Maloney of Kentucky, it's car crashes. From minor to major, accidents have become art. Her next project is a bit more uplifting.

"I'm going to interview people in Dallas about the hole in Texas Stadium and whether or not God actually watches their team," said Maloney.

Just in case she has to call God, she'll be happy to know, it's a local call.
