Parents Take Active Role To Keep Kids Drug Free

DALLAS (CBS 11 News) ― Collin County parents got a sobering lesson in teen drug use Tuesday night.

While attending a drug forum, the parents learned what could be hidden in their home and to stop it drugs coming into their house.

The message was clear: Trust nothing. Not even a water bottle.

Even a typical water bottle can be converted into drug paraphernalia.

A Frisco detective took parents on a tour of their teenager's bedroom, which could be hidden with secrets.

He offered an innocent example -- a highlighter. The detective, however, explained how the hollowed out school supply could be made into a smoking pipe.

Some things are in plain view.

Officials said a can of air duster can be used as an inhalant.

Prescription drugs also tempt students, the police reminded.

Not only is it easy for teens to overdose, but some take them to school to use or sell, the experts explained.

"I was amazed at some of the things I never dreamed they would have," said Plano parent Sloan Coleman.

Organizers said the shock value is part of the education. They also had drug displays and a PowerPoint presentation.

The drug forum, sponsored by Plano ISD and the Collin County Substance Abuse Coalition, was held at Plano West Senior High School.

"It's always there, because we're so close to the border," explained Sgt. Terence Holway of the Plano Police Department. "And the drug dealers are good marketers, and it's all about the money."

For parents, it was a jarring wakeup call that could save lives.

"I'm going to home and check [my daughter's] things," assured Plano parent Donna Doeringsfeld. "I am."
