Grandmother Talks About Carjacking, Kidnapping
DALLAS (CBS 11 News) ―
A Dallas woman whose 2-year-old granddaughter was abducted by a carjacker is speaking out about the ordeal.
Hermoine Fears was back in her grandmother's lap Thursday. It is a happy ending to what began as a horror story in a parking lot in southeast Dallas.
"That's where he hit me -- in the back of the head... bam!" Anita Fears, the carjacking victim, said.
Fears was taking her two-year-old granddaughter to McDonald's when she was attacked by a carjacker who sped off with Hermoine still strapped into her child seat.
"I chased the car and hollered and hollered, plea bargained for them to please give me back her," she said. "I see these things everyday, but when it happens to you it's totally different."
Police don't believe the teenage carjacker knew there was a toddler in the vehicle when he chose his victim last night.
Police found the little girl along the side of a remote road a mile away.
The 16-year-old carjacker abandoned the child before leading police on a high speed chase that ended when he wrecked the car. Police were able to apprehend and arrest him.
The toddler's memory of Wednesday night will soon fade. But her grandmother can't forget what happened and isn't ready to forgive the teenage carjacker.
"They're growing up in a lifestyle where they have no home training, no respect for others. It's a car - just a car," Fears said. "I'm sorry. Lord forgive me, but may he rot in Hell for what he did."
Fears wanted to express her gratitude to the police officers involved in the dangerous high speed pursuit of the carjacker and the citizens who found the child quickly on the side of a road and called police.
The suspect now faces three felonies as well as the wrath of an angry grandmother.
