New Details About Dallas Kids Found In Squalor

DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― CBS 11 News has learned new information concerning the case of two small children found abandoned in Dallas.

As first reported on CBS 11 News at 10, the house on Holmes Street, where the children were found, was dilapidated and filled with trash. The two and five-year-old girl and boy were found alone.

P
olice went to the house to do a welfare check after receiving an anonymous phone call.

Greg Amphy, 22, is in jail facing child endangerment charges. It was his two children that were found in the boarded up, vacant house. The house had no electricity, no water and the toilet had overflowed with human excrement. Police are not sure how long the children were left alone.

Police say they found marijuana, an assault rifle and several stolen cars at the house. Officers believe the location was a drug-flop house.

"Although they [the children] appeared dirty and unkempt, they did not have any obvious injuries or medical conditions that required them to be transported to the hospital at that time," said Marissa Gonzales with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services.

A woman, who only identified herself to CBS 11 News as Amphy's former girlfriend, said the man is a victim of a misunderstanding and that he was trying to take care of the children.

"It's not too many fathers out here that take care of their kids," she said. "At least he was trying. I'm not gonna say he was right for having them here [at the abandoned house], but if he had to have them with him at all times that's just what that is."

Officials with Child Protective Services have located the children's mother and are questioning her. Reportedly the woman, who has legal custody of the children, told CPS workers that Amphy wanted to see the kids, so she let him take them for a few days. She reportedly also said she knew nothing about the address where the children were found.

As of Wednesday afternoon the children remained in foster care. CPS officials have not determined if the children will be returned to their mother or if they will try to locate suitable relatives for them to stay with.
