Dallas Approves Charging For Causing Car Wrecks
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
The Dallas City Council has unanimously approved a proposal that would charge a fee to people who cause car wrecks on city streets, but the penalty targets drivers who don't live in Dallas.
Citizens already pay for public safety services; citing budget issues, Dallas officials believe some others should pay as well.
John Murray repaired his fence Wednesday. It's the same fence that has faced out of control cars crashing at a busy Richardson intersection.
But Murray would be the one paying a fee if he had a wreck on a Dallas street. The homeowner doesn't mind the idea. "I think that's fair," he said. "I think if you have an accident, if you knock something down in Dallas, then you've gotta pay for it."
That, apparently, is the City of Dallas' thinking. The city has proposed an "accident cleanup fee". When emergency crews have to clean up hazardous fluids, like gasoline or oil, there would be a fee attached.
The city suggests drivers who caused the accidents, who aren't residents of Dallas, should receive a bill.
Ted Crow lives in nearby University Park. "If they're gonna do that with residents from outside the City of Dallas, then why shouldn't we put a toll road on Lovers Lane and Mockingbird and charge Dallas residents money for coming through our city?" Crow asked.
The City of Dallas says some 8,000 wrecks clog up roadways yearly and an accident fee for non-residents could generate $1 million in revenue.
