Lake Worth police have charged an 18-year-old with tampering with a consumer product for allegedly trying to give drug-tainted cookies to several police officers.
Bond for Christian Phillips has been set at $75,000. What will happen next in this case will be determined by exactly what is found in the cookies.
A preliminary drug test showed the cookies were laced with the hallucinogenic drug LSD.
Wednesday, the Tarrant County Medical Examiners office indicated the cookies they tested so far did not have drugs in them, but additional testing may be done. Officials are expected to release the rest of the results by Thursday.
According to Lake Worth police, Phillips, who is from Watauga, allegedly walked into the Blue Mound Police Department on Monday, told officers he was with Mother Against Drunk Driving and offered cookies to the officers. The officers accepted the cookies, but when they unwrapped them they smelled like marijuana. They turned over the cookies to a Blue Mound detective, who called Lake Worth Police on the chance that Phillips would try to take cookies there as well.
Apparently that's just what Phillips did. At 10:30 Monday morning, police say the teen walked into the Lake Worth Police Department and offered cookies to officers there.
While Phillips was still at the station the cookies were opened and again there was the smell of marijuana. Officers arrested Phillips and later charged him with possession of LSD.
Police say they could only enforce the additional tampering charge because no one at the Lake Worth Police Department ate the cookies.
Phillips was also allegedly carrying a list containing the names of at least six other police agencies to which he planned to deliver cookies.
Watauga police have also confirmed that they received a cookie delivery from MADD. Four officers there ate the cookies, but did not become sick. Police have not definitively linked those cookies with the ones being delivered by Phillips, but the officers and the cookies are being tested just in case.
Fort Worth police say they also received a delivery of cookies and candy that might have been tainted. In a statement, police spokesman Lt. Paul Henderson says at least three police officers ate items from the basket. Henderson won't say whether the officers suffered any effects from what they ate. He says the items in the basket are being tested for drugs.
Phillips reportedly denied trying to contaminate the goodies or harm anyone and said one of his friends may have been smoking pot while he was baking.
