Suspected Dallas Copper Thief Electrocuted
DALLAS (CBS 11 News) ―
A man was electrocuted Sunday afternoon in West Dallas, possibly while trying to steal copper from electrical lines.
Neighbors discovered the man's body Sunday afternoon, but investigators believe the man died early that morning when a power outage was reported in the area. Police say the man may have climbed a tree in an attempt to cut copper from a power pole.
Police Detective Phil Harding said, "We've had this happen several times a year where people are trying to steal copper and sell it. It's very high-priced now. They don't know what they're doing; they'll grab the wrong wire and ground themselves and this is what happens."
Copper thefts have been a common occurrence across North Texas recently. At least four churches have been hit by copper thieves.
