Man Watching Steeple Go Up Killed When Crane Falls

OKLAHOMA CITY (CBS 11 News/AP) ― An 80-year-old man watching a steeple being put on a church was killed this morning when a crane collapsed and crushed the car he was in. Firefighters say the man and a 78-year-old woman were in the car in the parking lot of the church in southwest Oklahoma City when the crane fell about 10 a.m.

Their names haven't been released.

The crane operator wasn't injured.

In June, three workers were seriously injured in a crane accident at the new Dallas Cowboys stadium in Arlington. Workers were in the process of assembling a crane on the ground and were using another crane to help lift the heavy loads. The second crane fell when a cable connector failed.

In May, a worker in downtown Dallas was killed after a piece of equipment fell from a cable and struck him.

There have been several deadly crane accidents around the country this year. One in Houston last week killed four contract workers and injured seven others.

Crane-related deaths have also occurred in New York, Miami and Las Vegas.
