Fire Destroys Popular Uptown Italian Restaurant
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
The Cremona Italian Restaurant, which had been a fixture in Dallas for three decades, was destroyed in one day.
Ashes and debris are the only thing left of the popular Uptown Italian restaurant. An early morning fire destroyed the eatery located in the 3100 block of Routh Street, between the Uptown and Turtle Creek areas.
Some say the fire started in a neighboring paintball business, but fire investigators have not determined where or how the fire started.
The fire was spotted around 2:30 Tuesday morning by a police helicopter flying overhead. By the time firefighters arrived the building was already engulfed in flames.
Seventy-seven firefighters worked with 20 pieces of equipment trying to save the business. Battling the blaze was difficult with high winds hampering the efforts of fire crews.
The restaurant had been owned by family members for three generations. "We've been here since 31 years. We loved it. This was our life," said owner Sylvia Drekaj. "Cremona for us was everything."
The restaurant is part of several businesses in a larger building. While the building owner had insurance, the owners of Cremona did not. The proprietors say the building owner has offered to help them recover from the $300,000 in damages. As the restaurant owners sifted through the rubble they managed to save the restaurant sign and say they hope to put it up in a new location very soon.
