No Crossing Guard Present When Dallas Student Hit

by J.D. Miles
DALLAS (CBS 11 News) ― A driver in Dallas, who hit a child that was on her way to school, will not face any criminal charges. Since the incident there are more questions about the intersection where the accident took place.

There was no crossing guard at the intersection of Timberglen and Kelly in Dallas when the 8-year-old student was struck.

The second grader at Sheffield Intermediate Elementary School was run over just after 8:00 a.m. The girl suffered a broken leg.

Some Carrollton school officials say they're frustrated about the lack of a full-time crossing guard at the intersection. "We need a crossing guard at this corner. There's no doubt about that," said Dr. Charles Cole, CISD Assistant Superintendent. "We have provided the data to the Dallas Police Department. They [the City of Dallas] control crossing guards, they hire, train, place crossing guards."

The Dallas Police Department supplies crossing guards for all schools in the city, but currently has 22 open positions. CBS 11 News reported on the crossing guard shortage last month and showed how some police officers were being taken off patrol to fill crossing guard shifts.

While there is an immediate need for crossing guards DPD officials say it's not a crisis situation.

"We fill the ones that are high priority – meaning the highest volume of traffic, the highest volume of pedestrian traffic, kids actually crossing the school zone. We fill those without any hesitation because there's so much danger there," said Lt. Manny Guevara, Dallas Police Department.

A civilian crossing guard was at the accident intersection Monday afternoon and will be for the foreseeable future.
