Trial Starts For Dad Charged With Killing His Kids

DALLAS (AP) ― The capital murder trial of a man accused of shooting his two children before turning the gun on himself started today in Dallas.

Hector Rolando Medina faces the death penalty in the March 2007 deaths.

Police say Medina killed three-year-old Javier and eight-month-old Diana after the children's mother told authorities he abused her.

The children were found in the couple's Irving home two days after the children's mother sought a protective order. Their mother, Elia Martinez-Bermudez, was not home at the time of the shootings.

Medina was hospitalized for about a week and then taken to the Dallas County Jail. The native of El Salvador has remained there on an immigration hold.

According to court records, a bullet remains in his neck.

Medina's attorney has tried to persuade prosecutors to give her client life in prison with no possibility of parole.
