Dallas Apartment Residents Say They Have No A/C
By Arezow Doost
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Tenants at one North Texas apartment complex say they've had enough after dealing with no air conditioning for more than 2 weeks.
Today dozens of families demanded answers at the Barclay Square apartments in Pleasant Grove.
"Come out! Come out," is what some families were chanting in front of the manager's office.
"We have to take showers 3 to 4 times a week just to be able to sleep," says James Juarez. She was among dozens at a protest outside the manager's office. Advocacy group, Accion America, tried to get the group some answers.
No manager would come to the door instead the manager called Dallas Police. Officers say they got a disturbance call and wanted to check it out.
Meanwhile, residents weren't giving up and wanted to see code enforcement inspectors on the property.
"If we were to stand outside for 5 minutes it's nothing compared to what it is like in here," describes Rosa Castillo.
Castillos says she has to leave her balcony doors open just to get some air. "I can't even cook in the kitchen because it's so hot," says Castillo "I have a one year old that I have to constantly bath."
Other families say they have had to rush their kids to the hospital several times this week because of heat exhaustion.
"My baby was hot and his nose was bleeding," says Maria Lopez.
A spokesperson with the city says inspectors checked out 43 units on Thursday morning and found the air conditioner working in all but one.
The city code requirements say the temperature has to be at least 85 degrees. Code compliance inspectors think it will take 24 hours to fix the problem.
If there is no air conditioning tenants say they will pursue legal action.
