Would-Be Car Buyers Robbed At Gunpoint In Dallas
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Two North Texas men were robbed at gunpoint recently as they tried to buy a car.
The men, who work together, don't want to be identified. We'll call them Chris and Ron. They buy used cars for a living. "We buy them, wholesale them or crush them," Chris said.
They advertise in classified ad publications like the
Greensheet, and also on the sides of their wreckers.
When someone answered one of their ads offering to sell them a car, they agreed to meet the man and carried cash. "They know we're coming out with cash," said Ron, "so we're easy targets."
When the men got to the neighborhood, the suspect climbed into their truck and directed them to the vehicle he was supposedly selling. They pulled up and Chris started to check out the car.
"I was looking inside the passenger window and I heard a clicking noise" he said. "Then I looked toward him and there was a gun six inches from my face."
Chris dropped his wallet on the ground and then another suspect came from behind a house. The two men took the money and ran.
Chris and Ron say they should have been more careful. They usually check out a neighborhood first, but didn't this time.
"We let our guard down," said Ron. "It won't happen again."
And they also want to warn others looking to make a transaction with a stranger: the person on the phone could be a thief.
If you're thinking of selling or buying something from a stranger, consider meeting in a more public place, like a busy parking lot, where there will be a lot of people around.
