North Texans watched in horror as the events unfolded Thursday at Fort Hood. Many who have family stationed at the Central Texas post could only wait for their loved ones to reach them.
Local Army mother Barbara, who didn't want to reveal her full name to protect her son, says her 23-year-old son was at the dentist today, and not with his unit inside the building where the soldier opened fire.
"He sent me in a text and said I'm ok mom, I'm ok. Two guys in our unit did get hit, we don't know if they're dead or if they're wounded."
She says while she's relieved he and his wife and grandsons were safe on base, she still feels a deep sense of loss.
"All I thought about hoping my son was not one, was praying for those mothers and those families that lost those people, why? Because someone couldn't take it anymore and decided to take somebody out with him."
Julie Miller feels the same way. Her son, Aaron, who's also staioned at Fort Hood, called to tell her he was ok.
"I feel so bad for the families who lost their loved ones."
Both Julie and Barbara have two children in the military.
She says she also feels saddened for the shooter's family, and the shooter himself. "You have to lose your mind to do something like that to your brothers in arms, people that protected you and had your back."
Even though it's still early in the investigation, both mothers say they believe the military must do more to identify troubled soldiers and help them.
