Armed Dallas Bank Standoff Ends; Suspect Dead
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
A would-be bank robber was shot and killed Tuesday during an armed standoff with Dallas Police.
Police say the attempted robbery happened at about 2 p.m. at the Chase Bank branch at 4435 South Lancaster in Dallas. That's just north of the VA Medical Center.
Dallas Police and SWAT officers converged on the bank shortly afterward. Authorities say they were met by several customers and employees who had fled from the bank. Dallas Police Chief David Kunkle said the gunman was still in the bank with seven bank employees and customers still inside.
A short while later, another group of customers and employees ran out of the building. An armed security guard was in the second group.
Kunkle said the suspect shot at the guard, and officers think the guard returned fire. One of the bullets grazed the guard's upper body, and authorities say he was taken to Methodist Hospital for evaluation.
Two other people were also taken to Methodist Hospital. They injured their ankle and knee while running away from the building.
SWAT officers then entered the building to rescue a woman hiding under a desk. That's when police say they discovered the suspect's body.
Kunkle said it's not clear whether the guard killed the gunman or he shot himself. Officers are not releasing the name of the suspect, pending notification of his next of kin.
Early reports indicated there might have been more than one robber, but Kunkle says after talking to bank employees they think the man was alone.
Dallas Independent School District administrators locked down nearby Lisbon Elementary and Darrell Elementary as a precaution, and as of 3:48 p.m. parents were not being allowed to pick up their children for safety reasons.
Dallas Area Rapid Transit closed its Keist Station at Lancaster and Keist, also as a precaution.
