Dallas County Jail Fails Another Inspection

DALLAS (CBS 11 News) ―

The Dallas County Jail has failed another state inspection.

State inspectors have been going through the jail this week.

The county has spent millions of dollars to hire additional officers and to pay for overtime, which addressed one of the complaints from inspectors in the past.

Now inspectors say some officers might not have been properly trained in how to handle a fire in the jail.  And some fire and smoke detection systems weren't working.

Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price said the problems "are facility issues.  The sheriff, in terms of staffing and managing herself, she's done what she is supposed to do. It's incumbent on the county to move to the next level."

In a statement, a spokesman for Sheriff Lupe Valdez said the report "described nine minor issues, all but one of which Sheriff Valdez has no control over."  He says Valdez plans to ask for control over some of those areas
