Drunk Driver Sentenced For DFR Firefighter's Death
Marianne Martinez
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
A tearful widow took the stand in court Thursday to confront the man who admitted to killing her husband.
Dallas firefighter Julio Alvarado died last year when a drunk driver slammed into his car.
Derone Jones pleaded guilty to intoxication manslaughter for killing Alvarado. But his widow says that is little consolation.
Teresa Alvarado took the stand after Jones was sentenced to 15 years in prison. She told Jones she would rather not see him, but she was in court for her husband.
Last November, police say Jones was going 105 miles an hour when he ran a red light at the intersection of Cockrell Hill and Illinois. He hit Alvarado's car, split it in half and caused him to be ejected.
Alvarado left behind three children.
"Your reckless behavior has caused our family so much pain. Now, he will not watch his children grow and cannot be there to celebrate all of their accomplishments," said Teresa Alvarado.
Prosecutors were able to determine the car's speed by deciphering information recorded by the black box inside the vehicle. It's one of the first times that technology was used by law enforcement.
