Off-Duty Dallas Firefighter Dies in Wreck

(CBS 11 / TXA 21) An off-duty Dallas firefighter was killed Saturday morning  when he was hit by a another driver.

About 1 a.m. the two vehicles collided at Cockrell Hill Road and Illinois Avenue and Alvarado was thrown from the car, officials said.

Julio Alvarado Jr., who  worked at Fire Station No. 28, died at the scene.

Authorities said Derone Jones was driving westbound at high rate of speed and crossed a red light when he struck Alvarado's car.

Friends said the 32-year-old was headed home from working with some relatives in the Dallas area when the accident happened.
 
Jones was arrested and charged with intoxication  manslaughter. The female passenger who was with Jones suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital.

Alvarado volunteered as  a little league football coach with the Eagles Association in North Oak Cliff, friends said.

He is survived by his wife, Maria Teresa, and three children.
