Dallas St. Paddy's Day Parade Doesn't Disappoint
Kaushal Patl & Bud Gillett
DALLAS (CBS 11 News) ―
St. Patrick's Day isn't until Monday, but the celebrations in many cities across the U.S. including in Dallas -- already have started.
Tens of thousands of people converged onto Lower Greenville for the Annual St. Paddy's Day Parade on Saturday with the hopes of making this year's celebrations safer.
One way to make sure of that was an extra police presence including officers on horses, bikes, cars and even watching from the air.
For three decades partygoers have descended upon Lower Greenville Avenue for this annual event. This year, the residents asked police to focus on three areas this year: towing enforcement, trash and extra officers.
To make sure everyone of every age enjoyed the day safely, more officers patrolled the streets and half a dozen tow trucks waited to tow illegally parked vehicles.
'No Parking' Signs lined the north side of many Greenville streets, but were ignored by some. Homeowners appreciated the quicker response time this year with the tow trucks only blocks versus tens of miles away.
One man was arrested for fighting with police while several others were arrested for drunkenness or urinating in public. Most came following hours of drinking and as police began clearing the street after events. Further up Greenville Avenue following the parade, the street was littered with cans and broken bottles with few people attacking the mountains of litter.
Code enforcement ticketed businesses that failed to clean up and issued citations to the parade's promoter as well, according to an angry Dallas councilwoman Angela Hunt. She says he didn't clean up, either.
