Every parent wants the best education for their children... even if it means going to extremes to make it possible. Monday, hundreds of parents did just that in hopes of landing a spot for their child in a prestigious Dallas magnet school.
"I grabbed my kids' air mattress and came up here," explained parent Lisa Nemeroff. With blankets, toboggans and gloves in hand, parents showed up at Dallas area magnet schools in hopes of helping their children succeed.
Dozens of people lined up at Dealey Montessori School, on Royal Lane. Many parents went to the magnet open house and decided, even if they had to brave the cold and sleep in a parking lot, they would get their children into the best schools.
"This Montessori school is a great one. There are only two in Dallas," mother Mickey Freedman told CBS 11 News. "Families want their kids in this school."
Equipped with lawn chairs, tents and sleeping bags and blankets, many spent Sunday night outside the school. Others, however, admitted their quest began at 5 a.m. Sunday.
Monday was the first day parents could hand in applications to get their kids into Dallas ISD magnet schools.
With only a few positions open in each of the Dallas Independent School District's 26 magnet schools, some parents feel the district needs to do more.
"I think it would be great if we could be as passionate about this school as all of the schools in Dallas," suggested Freedman.
The North Texas parents will have to wait at least a week to find out if their efforts paid off.
Even parents, who didn't stand in line overnight, can still turn in an application. Below is a list of the 26 DISD Magnet Schools.
