Study Says Fort Worth Has Deadliest Texas Roadways
FORT WORTH (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Chances are you drive your family around on some of the most dangerous roads in the state. A new study shows the City of Fort Worth has the deadliest roadways in Texas.
The numbers certainly are surprising when you think about other cities like Dallas and Houston, which are much larger that Fort Worth.
Here's how the numbers stack-up per capita -
In 2007 Fort Worth had a traffic fatality rate of 12.2 per 100,000 residents. The rate in Dallas was slightly less with 11.7. The City of Arlington had a rate of 6.6, which is a dramatic 20-percent decrease from 2006.
CBS 11 News talked with some drivers in Fort Worth who had mixed reactions about the numbers.
Driver Cathy Baldridge believes some Tarrant County streets are hard to navigate. "Sometimes I think the roads are confusing in Fort Worth, especially in downtown and that area."
"Off of East Lancaster I've known maybe four people, in the last year, that have been killed just crossing the road," another driver said.
Officials with the Fort Worth Police Department say nearly half of the 2007 fatalities were alcohol related - meaning either the driver, passenger, or pedestrian involved had been drinking. More than half of the fatal accidents occurred on freeways.
In 2007 there were 25 accidents involving automobiles and pedestrians, up from 18 in 2006.
The police department is confident its stepped efforts in DWI and speeding enforcement will help drop the number of fatalities this year.
