Dash Cam Captures DPD Officer Shooting Unarmed Man

Marianne Martinez
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Dallas police released dash cam video Monday of the fatal shooting of an unarmed man.

According to police, a Dallas officer fired a single shot, killing 31-year-old Derrick Jones on Sept. 16.

Here's what police say happened that day: Two officers traveling in separate squad cars saw a Mercedes rear end an elderly man. The driver of the Mercedes fled the scene down Lancaster Ave. One officer attended to the elderly man while the other tried to stop the Mercedes.

At one point, police say two people jumped out of the Mercedes and ran away from the car. The driver, who police identified as Jones, drove further on Lancaster Ave. before jumping out.

The squad car's dash cam video confirms what officers report: The officer got out of his car and tried to get Jones to surrender at gunpoint. Jones approached the officer and a struggle ensued.

At that point in the video, the men step out of view. Police say the officer was being punched as he attempted to arrest Jones.

According to a press release, the officer "stated that he then felt as though he was going to be knocked unconscious… so he drew his service weapon and fired one shot."

The video shows the men stepping back into view and captures the officer shooting Jones, who died as a result of the injury.

Police say Jones was under the influence of PCP.

Recently, Jones' family said they felt the shooting was unjustified. Community leaders who viewed the tape don't trust the video, and say they have witnesses ready to testify that there was no altercation.

"We know after 14 days, anything can be shown on video," said Reverend Ronald Wright, civil rights activist.

"We have no interest in doctoring this video. It is illegal and would kill the integrity of the Dallas Police Department," said Dallas Police Lt. Vernon Hale.

The case will now be referred to a grand jury.
