Man Finds 2 Dead Bodies In Ellis Co. Home

FERRIS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― The quiet Ellis County town of Ferris is investigating its first murders in nine years.

The bodies of a man and woman were found inside a home on the 400 block of South Church Street Monday afternoon.

Sources tell CBS 11 News a family member became concerned after he didn't hear from his brother.

Around 1:30 p.m., the man went to his brother's home. When no one answered, he opened a window and climbed in.

Once inside, the man found his 39-year-old brother dead in the bedroom.

When police arrived, they found the body of a second victim. The female was identified as 29-year-old Janice Johnson.

Police say the two victims lived in the house together as a couple, and they had only lived in the home for a month.

Police say evidence points to a double homicide rather than a murder suicide, and there were no signs of forced entry into the home.

So far, police believe the killer is someone the couple knew.

"We don't want people to be overly alarmed by this, but to act like they normally would act in normal circumstances," said Ferris Police Chief Frank Mooney.

Police also say nothing was taken from inside the home, so robbery does not appear to be a motive.

Chief Mooney said the woman's throat was slashed, her arms were cut and there were signs of a struggle. The man's legs were also cut.

Police say it appears the couple was attacked while they were sleeping.

Family members were seen gathering at the house and talking with officers.

The police chief said at this point there are no leads or suspects, but there are people they will be interviewing.
