Man Dies After Falling Into Ellis County Fire

A man died and a woman was burned in the fire northeast of Midlothian Saturday afternoon.

Firefighters said the man fell into the fire and suffered burns all over his body. He was taken by air ambulance to a hospital, where he later died.

Midlothian Fire Department officials said the fire started before noon, but continued to smolder at 6 p.m.

They are not sure what caused the fire or what lead up to the man falling into it.

The 55-year-old woman with him received second and third degree burns on her legs trying to help the man.

An estimated 10 acres of the ranch burned and it spread quickly through bales of hay on the property.

"Living out here, you think you're safe. But when you have hay, you have to be wise to it," explained nearby resident Barbara Dawson.

This ranch is in Ellis County, where a burn ban remains in effect.

Fire fighters urge residents to be mindful of how the hot, dry climate can contribute to highly flammable conditions.
