Two Deep Ellum Bars To Shut Down

DALLAS (CBS 11 News) ― More than a dozen Deep Ellum bar owners fought to keep their businesses open. The owners met with the Dallas City Council Wednesday.

Of those, only two bars and clubs will have to shut down after not receiving Specific Use Permits: Club One and Club Uropa.

The debate focused on whether the bars were good neighbors or detriments to the community.

"There are buildings down there that have been vacant for two years; restaurants that are gone because they couldn't stay in business because of people getting mugged and everything else down there," said property owner Don Cass. "They were people coming out of these clubs."

Mayor Tom Leppert suggested the meeting was a time to develop long term plans for Deep Ellum.

"What seems to be a wide spread view held by many is that culture can and should be purchased. Culture is grown and unique to a given area," said local artist Barry Kooda. "To boot out the musicians in the French Quareter would be unthinkable, but Deep Ellum is just as famous and has had a world reputation since the twenties."

Eight other bars and clubs did receive their permits.
