Air Travel Hectic, But Smooth For Most At DFW
COPPELL (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
The last weekend in December is traditionally a very busy weekend at DFW International Airport, with people coming back from Christmas holidays and leaving for New Year's. This year, however, the economy changed the look of things.
In 2007 security lines and checkpoints were much longer; DFW Airport officials say holiday travel is down about 7 percent from this time last year.
Less foot traffic and shorter lines may seem like a holiday gift to some. Some travelers say don't be fooled, this travel season was still packed with hassle.
Travelers say they had to deal with events ranging from lost bags to cancelled flights. Added with the heavy fog and icy weather in parts of the country earlier in the week, some travelers like Joe Gilbert, were just glad to be done. "We get on the plane and the pilot goes
'we've got good news and bad news
the good news is your going to be warm
the bad news is your going to be here for about an hour-hour and a half while we deice the plane and most of the dicers are frozen right now.'"
In Chicago, the heart of flight connections for the northeast, hundreds of flights were cancelled. This year some travelers also had to deal with airlines tightening their belts, added baggage feeds and decreased flights.
But on Sunday at DFW, most of the flights were departing and arriving on time, making traveling for the New Year more carefree.
