DFW Airport Employees Get Help To Stay In Shape
DFW AIRPORT (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Lunchtime pickup games are common all over North Texas, but for almost 1,300 employees at DFW International Airport, getting in a workout at the airport-owned Livewell Center is a part of their daily routine.
"It's a true investment in the health and wellness of DFW employees," Amanda-Rae Garcia, the DFW Airport Wellness Manager, told CBS 11's Gina Miller.
The Center is part of a corporate wellness program DFW started in 2006. It offers fitness programs, weight loss, and classes to help employees quit smoking. The goal is to help employees get in shape and focus on their health.
"Things like hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, stress weight management these are all things that we have seen reduced in our employee population," said Garcia.
For Lenona Nichols, the Center was an integral part of her recovery from a car accident. She was in a coma for six months and a wheelchair thereafter.
"I started working out and I am walking here today," she said, "and it's all attributed to healthy living and working out."
David Turner has his own reason to get fit.
"I was very overweight and I have young children and a wife," he told CBS 11, "I wanted to live longer. That motivated me to get involved."
Turner has lost 160 pounds.
"It has actually helped me financially," he shared, "because it helped me get off medication. I was taking ten pills a day. Now I'm down to two pills."
It's not only the employees that benefit from the Center. Research has shown that healthy, active employees are more productive, have fewer sick days and lower insurance costs, benefitting DFW Airport.
