CBS 11 Goes Behind The Restaurant Kitchen Door
FORT WORTH (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Some local restaurants are still having problems making the grade, possibly putting your health at risk.
In his latest dirty dining report, CBS 11's Bennett Cunningham walked into the kitchen at
Grand China Super Buffet on Jacksboro Highway in Fort Worth. Inside, he couldn't stop counting all the flies buzzing around the food and there were shrimp and noodles sitting out to warm to room temperature. At one sink, there was no hand soap for kitchen employees to wash their hands.
Records show that inspectors visit
Grand China Super Buffet often, possibly because the restaurant doesn't score well. City inspection reports show
Grand received at least 30 demerits on four of the last six regular health inspections. A score of more than 30 demerits is considered 'poor' by the City of Fort Worth.
On previous visits, inspectors found flies, gnats, and issues of cross food contamination. In one instance an inspector found beef at about 60 degrees, nearly 80 degrees off temperature. The meat needed to be at 140 degrees to avoid bacteria growth. The owner had no comment.
Cunningham also visited
Cattlemen's Steakhouse in the Fort Worth Stockyards. In August, the City of Fort Worth branded
Cattlemen's with 46 demerits.
Inspectors found unwholesome milk, flies, and no soap in the employee restroom. On one inspection, the inspector found evidence of mice and a dead or trapped bird in the storage room. When CBS 11 asked to see the kitchen we were told that the restaurant scored poorly in the past because it was under construction and then were asked to leave.
So, after getting kicked out, Cunningham drove over to
Fried Chicken Deluxe on Miller Avenue. Health inspection scores there were so bad, the city and the owner worked out a plan of action. In recent years, inspectors found roaches inside the chicken batter unit, evidence of mice, live roaches and roach egg capsules adhering to the food prep area.
Once again, CBS 11 asked to see the kitchen and unlike during previous inspections, the owner had changed his ways. He let us in the kitchen and the place was
spotless.
All the restaurants in this story passed a
re-inspection and are open for business.
